Retainer Time!

You are completing your orthodontic treatment. Whether you had regular braces or clear braces from Brooklyn orthodontics in Staten Island, a lot of time, pain, and effort went into making sure your teeth are straight and your smile is perfected. When your braces are removed, your orthodontist, Dr. Al-janabi, will give you a retainer. The retainer holds your teeth in the new positions so the bone tissue can rebuild around your straight teeth. It’s a stabilizing process that may take a while. A retainer is molded from your teeth and is specific to your bite and smile.

Retainer Types

A removable retainer is just that: removable. You can take it out and put it in your mouth as many times as you need. They are made of wire and hard plastic-like material. The plastic either covers the roof of your mouth or is placed behind your lower front teeth.

A permanent retainer is placed and removed by Dr. Al-janabi. It is also a custom fit. The wire is bonded to the inner side of your teeth, most likely on your bottom front teeth.

Wearing the Retainer

The retainer is a mechanism used to help your teeth stay straight when your braces are removed. If you do not wear your retainer as Dr. Al-janabi prescribed, your teeth can move back to your pre-braces smile. Additionally, your retainer will no longer fit correctly.
