National Children’s Dental Health Month

February is National Children’s Dental Health Month and it is especially important that your kids practice good dental hygiene when they have braces! As an orthodontist in Bay Ridge, it’s obvious when a patient has not practiced good oral hygiene and they can be left with white spots, cavities or a variety of other issues. Here are a few tips and tricks for taking care of your teeth while you have braces:

Flossing

Time and time again you will be told how important flossing is to oral health. Once per day your child should floss using whatever option that your orthodontist gave you to ensure that their gums stay healthy. Flossing can also help reach all of the nooks and crannies that might be difficult to reach with a toothbrush.

Rinsing/Brushing

Three to four times a day, yes three to four, your child should rinse their mouth with water to loosen any food that might be stuck in the braces and then brush thoroughly. You have to brush more frequently with braces because it is so easy for food to get lodged in and behind the braces, creating areas of potential decay.

Regular Cleanings

Every six months your child should visit the regular dentist for a cleaning and a checkup. The dentist can point out potential problem areas that you should keep an eye on, as well as clean in and around the braces.

If you follow the above suggestions from your orthodontist in Bay Ridge, your teeth should be in near perfect condition once you get your braces off for good. For orthodontic treatment contact Brooklyn Orthodontics today!
