Invisalign Guide: How Do You Clean Your Retainer?
How to Keep Your Retainer Clean
It’s a common question we receive from adults, teens, and parents alike—how do I properly clean my retainer? While owning a retainer for the first time can seem daunting, there are actually a few easy ways to keep it clean throughout the day.
1. Basic Wash
The easiest way to keep your retainer clean is with a basic water rinse. Simply rinse off your retainer with lukewarm water every time you brush your teeth. Just be sure you don’t let your retainer dry out, as this can damage the material. If you need to take your retainer out for more than a couple of minutes, let it soak in distilled water.
2. Baking Soda
For a deeper clean, scrub your retainer with a baking soda paste. To make this paste, thoroughly mix 1 part water and 1 part baking soda together. Then, gently scrub your retainer with the paste and a soft-bristled toothbrush. Rinse the paste away when you’re done.
3. White Vinegar
This method by far is the easiest way to give your retainer a deep clean. Combine equal parts white vinegar and water in a bowl. Then, simply soak your retainer in the mixture for at least 20 minutes.
4. Retainer Cleaner
If you don’t have the time to make homemade cleaners, you can also purchase a commercial retainer cleaner. Ask your orthodontics for cleaner recommendations.
