Dentofacial Orthopedics – Part I
What Is It And How Does It Differ From Traditional Orthodontics?
Many people think of orthodontics as simply the practice of having their teeth straightened with braces. But, did you know that this field of dentistry includes dentofacial orthopedics, which concentrates on improving the position and dimensions of your facial bones and jaw?
While orthodontics focuses on straightening your teeth and ensuring they are properly aligned, dentofacial orthopedic treatment focuses on the alignment of the bones that support and house your teeth.
About This Orthodontic Specialty
Dentofacial orthopedics is often applied to children prior to beginning orthodontic treatment, as these tools help guide the child’s jaw development while it’s still growing.
As children grow older, both the maxilla (upper jaw) and mandible (lower jaw) will continue to grow in three dimensions, determining the final positioning of the facial structure. The jaw will typically stop growing between the ages of 14 and 16 in women and between 17 and 21 in men, so it is always best to address any misalignment issues before adolescence if possible. .
In some children, the upper and lower jaws will grow at different rates and sizes, which will ultimately cause alignment issues with their teeth. Underbites, overbites, and other bite problems can also be caused by extensive thumb sucking and breathing difficulties.
