Adult Orthodontic Treatment – Facts & Myths – Part I

Crooked Teeth Have Always Been a Problem.

Humans have been having problems with crooked teeth for as long as they’ve been around. It’s just a fact. Archeologists have unearthed skulls of Neanderthal humans who had crooked teeth. However, as people became more advanced, they began to come up with ways to correct this problem.

As early as 400 B.C, Hippocrates documented misaligned jaws and teeth, Egyptian mummies were discovered wearing metal braces (though not nearly as advanced as orthodontic appliances are today), and a French dentist by the name of Pierre Fauchard wrote about orthodontic treatment in his book in 1728. He even included information about a tool which was a piece of metal that was tied to the teeth to slowly correct the alignment. He called it a “bandeau,” and it was quite like today’s orthodontic treatments.

Orthodontics Have Come a Long Way

While people have always struggled with crooked teeth, there is no longer any need to feel out of place when it comes to seeking adult orthodontic treatment. The technology has evolved significantly, and is now designed to be more comfortable, less noticeable, and less disruptive to your normal activities.

Despite the technological and aesthetic advances in orthodontic treatment, adults tend to avoid the orthodontist’s office. There is absolutely no reason to do this. Many adults choose to improve their smiles (and their confidence) with orthodontic treatment – especially since the invention of clear aligners. Additionally, traditional braces are more comfortable and aesthetically pleasing, are no longer just for kids – and may be the best treatment solution for you.
